Full Description:

When “Wee Pals” cartoonist Morrie Turner, a Bay Area native, returns to Livermore Tuesday to donate his time to the Library’s Summer Reading Game, he’ll be receiving a little something from the City Council: a special City Proclamation. When Bay Area native Turner started producing “Wee Pals” in 1965, his creation became the first nationally syndicated comic strip featuring a multiracial cast. Since nearly the beginning, he has been visiting schools and libraries, talking with children about cartooning, respecting peoples’ differences, and the importance of reading and getting a good education. Morrie’s humanitarian work has earned him a myriad of awards from groups including the Boys and Girls Club, the American Red Cross, the Anti-Defamation League, the NAACP, and the California Education Association. He is the subject of a documentary film, “Keeping the Faith with Morrie,” and in 2003 he received the National Cartoonist Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award. For his visit to the Livermore Public Library’s new Civic Center branch, Turner will be a featured guest in the annual Summer Reading Program, entitled “Hats Off to Reading!” He will address school-age children, drawing caricatures of several of them as he discusses achieving one’s goals in life. Turner’s personal motto, “Keep the Faith,” encourages people from all walks of life to follow his path of overcoming obstacles, believing in oneself and persevering in order to achieve worthy goals. The Proclamation from Mayor Marshall Kamena and the Livermore City Council commends Turner on his life’s work and humanitarian efforts.
