Livermore's Arroyo Seco Elementary School has been bestowed with a 2004 California Distinguished School Award. This year, 302 of the state's approximately 5,500 elementary schools received the honor.
"The Arroyo Seco community feels very honored to have been selected as one of the top schools in the state," said Arroyo Seco Principal Chris VanSchaack. "Students, staff, and parents deserve a tremendous amount of credit for the hard-work and vision that have made Arroyo Seco an exceptional place."
The Distinguished School program identifies and honors some of the state's most exemplary and inspiring public schools. "Distinguished schools are models of excellence," state schools Superintendent Jack O'Connell said in a prepared statement. "These schools have high expectations for their students and are holding themselves accountable for progress. By embracing rigorous standards and providing targeted support, they are a testament to what can be accomplished in public education and an affirmation that staying focused and on track is a formula for success."
Other local schools winning this year's honors include Montevideo & Vista Grande schools in the San Ramon Valley school district, Frederiksen Elementary in the Dublin school district, and Henry P. Mohr & Lydiksen in the Pleasanton school district.
